Double-header sponsorship agreement for Southern Sun

June 4, 2009

Southern Sun has just announced a double-header sponsorship agreement!

Following their 13 year relationship with SA Rugby, the hotel group has renewed their sponsorship contract for an additional two years.

They are now also the only South African company to sign up The British and Irish Lions 2009. They are now the Lions “Official Hotel and Supplier” – this will ensure that The Lions will stay at Southern Sun hotels across the country for the duration of their South African stay.

The sponsorship of SA Rugby sees Southern Sun become an Associate level sponsor of SARU, and this prestigious level within the South Africa Rugby Union sees the hotel group gain some exclusivity in its area of business. All the National Teams will stay in the comfort of the Group’s different hotel brands, while Southern Sun will also garner marketing, advertising and hospitality rights around SARU’s intellectual properties and events.

Graham Wood, the Managing Director of Southern Sun, said the group had a proud history attached to sport: it was lucky to gain the Indian Premier League with only three weeks of planning, and their organisation and efficiency resulted in 20 000 room nights being booked with them.

Over the years, SA Rugby and Southern Sun have built up a relationship built on trust, and  the latter is aware of its responsibility in accommodating the teams and making certain they were absolutely prepared for the battles they were to face.

He went on to say that the hotel group would use the excitement surrounding The British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa to enhance the popularity of the group itself.

According to Andy Marinos, the Manager of the South African National Team, what sets Southern Sun apart was that it truly understood the needs of the team, and was always willing to go the extra mile. He said Southern Sun has once again put its best foot forward in extending the sponsorship further. He concludes,” Keeping elite sports teams happy and comfortable is one of the key factors in all our planning processes and we know that our friends at Southern Sun with their excellent network of properties are able to provide that”.

Most of these sentiments were reiterated by John Feehan, the CEO of The British & Irish Lions, and he added that the fact that Southern Sun was now a sponsor for both teams was a testament to the group itself.

Southern Sun has been involved with almost every major sporting event or team in South Africa since 1995, including the Rugby World Cup in 1995, the Cricket World Cup 1999 and the upcoming Confederations Cup event.

To add to its track record of providing excellent service to many teams and federations throughout South Africa, the hotel group celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

One might not realise how much work takes place behind the scenes when a hotel group takes on the responsibility of hosting a world-class team. Just as an example, special beds have to be brought in to accommodate our rugby giants such as Bakkies Both and Paul O’Connell.

However, there is not a need that won’t be met when it comes to Southern Sun!
