NYT searching for assistant to Artistic Director

The National Children’s Theatre is searching for a new assistant to the Artistic Director as part of its strategic planning. This assistant position has the potential to be the successor of the theatre’s legendary founder, Joyce Levinsohn.

The person most suitable for this position, which is extremely demanding yet absolutely rewarding, would undergo a period of mentoring, spending time with Mrs Levinsohn as her understudy. They would learn the ethos of the National Children’s Theatre and its underlying philosophy, and also its practices, policies, challenges and opportunities.

Presently the theatre’s work is centred primarily on interactive musical theatre for primary school children, theatre-in education and life skills theatre for teenagers, and performance workshops for children between the ages of seven and 17.

It is ideal for the future Artistic Director to have had considerable experience of working in the environment of theatre for young people as an actor, director or both. This person also would ideally have had experience in the management of the theatre company and also must have a working knowledge of the demands of leadership that inevitably follow the position. The successful applicant co-ordinates the theatrical season and carries the responsibility for the choice of plays and other projects that are to be included in the programme, as well as the quality of the productions, casting and appointment of production staff. They would also facilitate programming activities to support the organisation’s management and its development.

The Artistic Director is also accountable to the Board of the National Children’s Theatre Trust.

The ideal candidate is a mature person with at least 15 years of experience in theatre, who is committed to broadening the National Children’s Theatre’s diversity and to improving its access by all audiences. fluency in three of the eleven official languages of South Africa is considered an asset.
