Sasol New Signatures Art Competition calls for entries

May 5, 2010

Sasol recently announced the launch of the 2010 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.

The competition is the oldest national art event in South Africa, and was established by the Association of Arts Pretoria in 1962, being sponsored by Sasol for the last 20 years. The competition this year is offering one lucky young South African artist the opportunity of winning a grand prize of R60 000! The runner-up and five merit winners receive R15 000 and R5 000 respectively.

The Competition aims at assisting emerging South African artists 18 and older who have not had a solo exhibition to become professional artists. A large percentage of entrants are art students, and the judges of the competition encourage artists to submit experimental and inspiring work.

The entry process includes attendance of one of the information sessions that are held around the country. The sessions, hosted by Peter Binsbergen, a highly-acclaimed artist and previous finalist of the Competition, cover the competition’s history and logistics, concepts and titles of works, presentation techniques, installations and working in different media. Individual attention is given to proposals and all technical problems are dealt with.

Artists are invited to submit a maximum of two artworks at one of the eight collection points around South Africa, or through the internet. Physical entries must be submitted on Monday 26 July 2010 and Tuesday 27 July 2010 between 10h00 and 16h00. Online entries may be submitted from 1 to 27 July 2010 here

Regional judges select about 100 works, which are exhibited at the Sasol New Signatures Exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum from 8 September 2010 to 3 October 2010. For more information, contact Nandi Hilliard at the Association of Arts Pretoria on +27 12 3463100 or through the website.
