Additional funding announced for ACT scholarship programme

It has been announced that the Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) Performing Arts Scholarships 2010 a substantial increase in funds. The programme is funded by DALRO (Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation) and Nedbank – the support sees two performing arts scholarships being awarded this year, and the combined total value of the scholarships is to be increased by R135 000.

According to Maseda Ratshikuni, Head of Nedbank Cause Marketing, “Through Nedbank supporting the arts over the past 15 years, we see beyond the entertainment value of the arts, and recognise its social and cultural significance.  Our support of the ACT Scholarship Programme is part of this ethos”.

Grade 12 learners and undergraduates who are younger than 27 years and who are not considered professional, have the chance to take part in a national competition where they are assessed on their acting, dancing and singing potential. Scholarship winners can select their preferred performing arts course at any accredited South African tertiary institution.

Gérard Robinson, Executive Director of DALRO, goes on to say, “Strategic partnerships between key players are fundamental to encouraging and nurturing the arts in South Africa. DALRO deems its partnership with the Arts and Culture Trust, Nedbank and other sponsors to be a shining example of resource-pooling with the object of giving of life’s most privileged gifts – education”.

As a result of the increasing number of enquiries ACT has received regarding the scholarship competition, registration closing dates have been extended: Grahamstown entries close on 25 June 2010; Durban entries close on 2 July 2010; Cape Town entries close on 9 July 2010; and Johannesburg entries close on 16 July 2010.

The two winners are to be announced at a final round at The Globe Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino on 28 September 2010.
