EXCITING LINE-UP FOR SUMMER IN STELLENBOSCH VALLEY

November 14, 2010

Discover the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands with the Summer in Stellenbosch Valley holiday programme this season.  Members of the Stellenbosch Valley sub-route have compiled an exciting line-up of family fun, fabulous foods and wonderful wines from 16 to 19 December.

The seventeen participating wine producers have pulled out all the stops to ensure that visitors will be able to experience the essence of the valley.  Their award-winning wines will definitely be in the spotlight, but additional activities have been incorporated into the programme to ensure that there is something to appeal to all guests, ranging from serious vinophiles to gourmands, parents and children.

The mouth-watering culinary calendar includes bubbly and marshmallow pairings at the House of JC Le Roux, olive tastings at Bonfoi, exotic mushroom and wine pairings and gourmet wraps at Lovane.  Middelvlei returns to their roots of old-fashioned, traditional hospitality with authentic South African outdoor cuisine, aptly named a “boerebraai” where guests can either do their own barbecue or leave it in the capable hands of the resident braai experts.  Special snack boxes are available for kiddies and they can even do their own stokbrood – a traditional bread cooked over the fire on a stick. Urban winery The High Road will be pairing their award-winning red wines with bites of sustainably sourced local red meats.

It’s summer time and the living is easy at Overgaauw where guests can enjoy gourmet sandwiches, special cheese platters and hot dogs for the youngsters.  Saxenburg offers traditional Karoo potjies at The Lapa with a special kids’ activity station on the lawn.  Stellenbosch Hills presents a carnivorous treat with a Wine & Biltong Adventure and a less meaty Nuts about Wine experience pairing a selection of nuts with five of their wines. SylvanVale Vineyards team up with the Devon Valley boutique hotel to offer daily wine tastings with finger snacks and chocolate truffles as well as a spectacular Vineyard Hiking Trail and live music on the terrace.

Wine lovers should not miss the opportunity to blend and label their own wines or to test their palates during a blind tasting competition at Zevenwacht.  Vinophiles will also have the chance to be amongst the first to taste the newly released 2008 vintage of De Toren Fusion V, which has already been nominated for 5 stars in the Platter Guide.  Although tastings at De Toren are normally conducted by appointment only, free tasting sessions will be hosted for the duration of the long weekend.  For a tasting with a twist, visitors can join George or Giorgio Dalla Cia for a comparative tasting of the Dalla Cia Grappas and an Italian grappa.

Die Bergkelder will stage a Fleur du Cap sensory experience tasting.  Louisvale wines will offer daily tasting sessions of their signature Chardonnay.  Red wine drinkers are in for a rare treat at Bergkelder where they can taste a selection of optimally matured red wines ranging from 1999 to 2005 during the daily Vinotèque Rare Vintage wine tasting.

Discover the amazing natural beauty of the Stellenbosch Valley with its majestic mountains and undulating vineyards during a scenic donkey vineyard walk and wine tasting at Bein Wines.  Alternatively, experience the panoramic view from Jordan during their sundowner vineyards tours.   Board the tractor-driven trailers for a wine tasting with a difference and sample the newly released 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and some of George Jardine’s delectable canapés at the top of the hill.  For a thrill of a different kind, visit the Lion Park at Vredenheim before enjoying a cheese and wine tasting.

Visitors will also be treated to great entertainment such as live music provided by Danny V during a summer sunset celebration at Middelvlei, Jo Martin in action at Lovane and a movie night with the still-to-be-released Bottle Shock and a three-course dinner paired with wines from Stellenbosch Hills at 33 Stellenbosch.  Somerset West based painter Jeanne Hendriks will be exhibiting her most recent works at Bonfoi.

Participating members include Bein Wine, Bergkelder, Bonfoi Estate, Dalla Cia, De Toren Private Cellar, House of J.C. Le Roux, Jordan Wine Estate, Louisvale Wines, Lovane Boutique Wine Estate, Middelvlei Wines, Overgaauw Estate, Saxenburg Wine Farm, Stellenbosch Hills Wines, SylvanVale Vineyards, The High Road, Vredenheim Wine Estate and Zevenwacht.  For a full programme schedule, visit www.wineroute.co.za and follow the sun for a listing of events.  For telephone enquiries, contact 021 886 4310 or e-mail info@wineroute.co.za.
